About Us

Who we are

In the Synod for Justice held in Rome in 1971, the Bishops discussed how the church should work for justice and Peace. At the end of the Synod, the Bishops decided to establish a Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace. They also decided that each Bishop's conference should establish a Justice and Peace Commission and that all Bishops should work towards establishing Justice and Peace Commissions in the Dioceses. The Pontifical for Justice and Peace was established in Rome in 1967.The Southern African Bishop's Conference (SACBC) was one of the first Bishop's conferences in the world to establish a Justice and Peace department in 1967.The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe was formed by the national Catholic Bishops Conference in March 1972.

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace was established for four main reasons.

a) For the local church to give witness to this concern for Justice and Peace.

b) For the laity to see that the Church is working for Justice and Peace.

c) To educate both laity and clergy as Christians.

d) For the Church to make positive suggestions for the enactment of just civil laws and their impartial administration, this needs the full involvement of all citizens of goodwill.

The Commission is affiliated to Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace in Rome and has active contact with commissions in other countries.
